Here is a quick reminder regarding this weekend’s UFC 108 fight - January 2nd, 2010. It’ll be the first big fight of the New Year and as always it should be exciting.

This was supposed to be a Rampage Jackson vs Rashad Evans coaches bout but, Rampage opted out to pursue an acting gig as 'B.A.' Baracus in the new A-team movie.

No biggie Rampage we’ll forgive you. So, headlining this card is Rashad Evans vs Thiago Silva. I think the consensus will be in Rashad’s favor. As for the rest of the card should be some good action. I can’t wait to see the Heavyweight bout between Junior dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel. Gilbert is one of the scariest looking guys in MMA. Junior is practically a pretty boy next to this guy. I still give Junior the edge because of how he won his last fight against Mirko Cro Cop. The other interesting fight and potential upset is the Lightweight bout between Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout. There is two likely ending either Joe will submit Sam or Sam will win by Decision (Unanimous). Sam is known for his explosive kickboxing and going the distance. Joe on the other hand has 14 wins by submission in 22 fights…unreal. My personal parlay here is Stout, Evans and dos Santos.

Gilbert Yvel – he’s scary right? But can he handle the emerging Dos Santos?

Kongo has a shot against Mir because Mir collapses whenever someone puts heat on him, but that fight is just going to be a gong show either way so no value.

BJ is going to totally wreck Diego. I piled on at -190 and continue to love it at -270. Diego has nothing at all for BJ. He can't out strike, out wrestle, or out grapple BJ. Bj's chin is too good to fall prey to a flukey shot. Diego goes inert when someone can out strike him and work a jab.

Florian/Guida is going to come down to size and wrestling. Florian has massively increased his core strength and wrestling, physically dominating Lauzon and Stevenson, and Guida is a bit small for 155.

UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun takes place this weekend in Los Angeles and here are some handicapping insights on the main card matches.

MAIN EVENT: Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua
With all due respect to UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, you’ve got to take the value with ‘Shogun’ Rua here. Before coming to the UFC ‘Shogun’ was on a short list for best ‘pound for pound’ fighters in the world. His run in the UFC got off to a bad start with a submission loss to Forrest Griffin. He had knee trouble during training and re-injured it in his subsequent fight against Mark Coleman. He’s since had knee surgery and looked very sharp in dominating Chuck Liddell at UFC 97.

‘Shogun’ has only lost three times in his MMA career—to Griffin in his UFC debut, to Mark Coleman at PRIDE 31 when he suffered a broken arm and couldn’t continue and early in his career to Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral. He’s beaten a who’s who of MMA superstars including Alistair Overeem (twice), Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Kevin Randleman and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.

As always, it comes down to a matter of value—we’re getting a fighter who as of mid 2007 was considered the best light heavyweight in the world as a +320 dog. At the price, theoretical break even is just under 25% and ‘Shogun’ has a much better shot than that. Granted, Machida’s style is a tough matchup for anyone but with ‘Shogun’ you’re getting a top notch fighter at a great value price. See the latest UFC 104 odds below.
BET: MAURICIO ‘SHOGUN’ RUA +320 OVER LYOTO MACHIDA

Cain Velasquez vs. Ben Rothwell

Velasquez is considered to be one of the next bigtime heavyweights by the UFC, but his win over Chieck Kongo at UFC 97 revealed some serious liabilities with his standup defense. Velasquez was dropped three times in the fight by Kongo’s punches, though he did recover each time and otherwise dominated the fight.
In this matchup, Ben Rothwell definitely has the striking power to exploit that weakness. ‘Big Ben’ has only lost once in his last 16 fights (to Andrei Arlovski at Affliction: Banned) and may have the best chin of any heavyweight in the sport. He’s also vastly more experienced than Velasquez, who’ll be fighting as a professional for just the 7th time here.

In other words, Rothwell definitely has a ‘puncher’s chance’ in this matchup and this should be a much more evenly contested fight that the wagering line suggests.
BET: BEN ROTHWELL +275 OVER CAIN VELASQUEZ

Gleison Tibeau vs. Josh Neer

Neer is a late replacement for Sean Sherk. Tibeau just a -130 favorite and while we think the underdog Neer has a good shot not much value backing him at even money. Pass.

Joe Stevenson vs. Spencer Fisher

Pretty simple concept here—these two fighters are much more evenly matched than the line suggests. Fisher has won four of his last five fights, while Stevenson has lost two of his last three. Value alone dictates a play on Fisher.
BET: SPENCER FISHER +205 OVER JOE STEVENSON

Anthony Johnson vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

Yoshida went 1-2 in his first three professional fights, and has only lost once since for a 11-3 professional record. Unfortunately for him, his only loss in his last eleven fights was a highlight reel knockout defeat to Josh Koshcheck. Koscheck, of course, is a top level opponent so it’s hard to diminish him too much for dropping that fight. Johnson has been pegged as something of a future superstar by the UFC, but in our view he’s a pretty one dimensional fighter. Johnson has decent wrestling skills, but nothing to suggest that he’ll matchup effectively with Yoshida’s judo and submission expertise.

Ultimately, this is another fight that comes down to value—this is much closer to a ‘coin flip’ than the line suggests and that alone dictates a play on the underdog Yoshida.

Heavyweight up and comer Cain Velasquez faces his toughest challenge to date as he takes on rugged Ben Rothwell. Rothwell showed an almost ungodly ability to take punishment in his Affliction: Banned loss to Andrei Arlovski and definitely has a ‘puncher’s chance’ in this matchup.

UFC 103: Belfort vs. Franklin. September 19, 2009

Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort

Luke Thomas: Candidly, I just don't know who to pick here. Vitor's blazing, straight punches against Franklin less-than-airtight defense makes me nervous. And while the weight class change has benefited Vitor, the wins over Martin and Lindland don't actually say a great deal. That being said, Franklin's recuperative powers are strong, but the space he had to do that against Wanderlei or Loiseau won't be afforded by Belfort. Coin toss. Here goes nothing. Belfort by KO, round 1.

Kid Nate: In the old days I'd say that this will either go quick and Vitor will win by KTFO or if it lasts more than 90 seconds that Rich will frustrate Belfort and find a way to win. With Vitor seemingly a new and improved fighter -- I'm most impressed by his grinding victory over Terry Martin at Affliction's first show -- this should be a very interesting bout. Franklin's awkward style and reach should give him an advantage in scoring points, but Belfort has the KO power. I'm going to go with my hopes here rather than my thoughts. Belfort by KO.

Brent Brookhouse: I am hoping that Vitor has it in him to pull out the victory, as that would freshen up the title picture greatly. Belfort's boxing and hand speed is always solid and he could KO Rich pretty much at any time. Franklin is a tough fighter who can pick apart his opponent over the course of three rounds. What I did see in the Wanderlei fight though was that Rich still has moments in fights, even those that he is controlling, where he leaves himself open to big shots from his opponent. Where Wanderlei looks for a big shot and has wider strikes, in those moments I think Vitor will throw flurries of hard, fast punches and that's where he wins. Vitor Belfort by KO, round 2.

Michael Rome: Having a hard time making my pick here. Rich has a hard time with lefties, but then again, Belfort is not even in the same universe as the two lefties that massacred Franklin. I think Franklin is actually the better fighter, and would win many more fights against top 10 middleweights than Vitor, but I can't shake the feeling this is ending by KO. I don't buy into this "new Vitor" stuff from Xtreme Couture at all, but I still think he has the power to catch Franklin. I wouldn't be surprised if Rich breaks Vitor down with kicks and wins an easy 30-27, but I'm going to go with Vitor Belfort via KO.

Mike Fagan: So, here I am, publishing a sweet gambling article where I think I'm some clairvoyant sonofagun picking Vitor Belfort over Rich Franklin. Then I open up our predictions document and all the staff so far has picked the Brazilian. So now I look like some two-bit chump. Anyway, long story short, Rich has had problems with lefties with speed who strike well and he leaves his face open after nearly every strike. Belfort's left handed and throws powerful, straight punches. Ruh roh. Vitor Belfort by TKO, round 1.

Chris Nelson: I do believe the fabled (and largely mythical) "Old Vitor" has finally returned. Franklin's probably gonna wish they'd set up that rematch with Hendo instead. Belfort via TKO, round 1.

Eugene Schelfaut: The speedy lefty will give Franklin problems, and those problems come in bunches. I'm not confident Rich will look for the takedown, that is until it is too late. Vitor Belfort via TKO, round 2.

Nick Thomas: I think Belfort has everything right going for him in 2009. His training, his mind set; Belfort is hot right now. As long as Belfort keeps this on the feet.. it's Belfort by TKO.

Leland Roling: Belfort's hand speed is the biggest concern for Franklin in this fight, and while Franklin states that he's fought a lot of speedier punchers -- Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva both flattened Rich. If Rich can somehow outlast the onslaught early, he might have a chance here... but I'll buy into the Vitor hype coming out of Xtreme Couture. Most notably, an improved gas tank coupled with his ever-improving boxing game should be enough to catch Rich at some point in this fight. Vitor Belfort via KO.

Dos Santos vs. Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic

Luke Thomas: Dos Santos' boxing is slightly overrated. He often over commits for power and off balances himself in the process. But that's not necessarily an error CroCop can take major advantage of. And CroCop can be backed up/tied up/pushed around by big, physical strikers. And his uppercut is just vicious. Dos Santos by TKO, round 2.

Kid Nate: I would love to pick Mirko here as I'd love to see the guy make a real run in the UFC in front of the American fans, but I just don't see it happening. Junior dos Santos seems to be too explosive and dynamic for Cro Cop. Dos Santos by TKO.

Brent Brookhouse: When it comes to Mirko's last fight everyone is SO hung up on the eye poke that it overshadows that he finally looked aggressive and was throwing consistently with power. Dos Santos has good power but he is nowhere near the striker Cro Cop is when he is on. I'm going to take a chance and say that he will be "on" come Saturday night. Mirko Filipovic by TKO, round 2.

Michael Rome: I flirted with picking Mirko, but he's just too slow and too old now to compete with Dos Santos. He's the better striker, but I think he is going to get outpaced badly. I see Mirko actually going flat out, which is something I don't want to happen. Dos Santos via KO, round 2.

Mike Fagan: I'm going to have to go head over heart here. All the evidence (Mirko's decline, dos Santos' size and recent performance) points to a very similar result as the Overeem and Kongo fights. Cro Cop can win if we see vintage Croatian, but I think that's unlikely. Junior dos Santos by decision.

Chris Nelson: I wish this was a tougher call, but Mirko hasn't looked like Mirko in years now and Cigano is one of the top HW prospects around. Cigano via submission, round 1.

Eugene Schelfaut: What is "Cigano" like in the second round? I don't want to find out. Junior Dos Santos via KO, round 1.

Nick Thomas: I can't wait for this fight. It wouldn't surprise me if Dos Santos tries to take this to the ground if things aren't going well standing. But I think Dos Santos can end this on the feet. Dos Santos by TKO.

Leland Roling: I want to pick Mirko "Cro Cop", and there is a part of me that wants to see Mirko prove all the doubters wrong by slapping a LHK upside Dos Santos' head, but will he actually be that Mirko once again? I'm not holding out much hope we'll ever see that Mirko, and Dos Santos has brutal power in the stand-up department. Junior Dos Santos via TKO, Round 2.

Martin Kampmann vs. Paul Daley

Luke Thomas: Kampmann is the overall better fighter and with Daley's submission liabilities, Kampmann should have this locked up. Daley lost to the cautious Thompson but defeated the more open Alessio. I'd say of the two Kampmann is more like Thompson in that regard. He can still get bombed on VERY easily, but this is the Dutchman's fight to lose. Kampmann via decision.

Kid Nate: Kampmann is too well rounded to fall into Daley's one dimensional Muay Thai game. Too bad Mike Swick got hurt. Kampmann by submission.

Michael Rome: I don't think Kampmann's kickboxing is any good, so Daley has the advantage there, but this is the big leagues and his lack of ground game will be his undoing. Martin Kampmann via submission.

Brent Brookhouse: Heading into the Marquardt fight i kept saying that I thought Kampmann's kickboxing was overrated, now seeing what Jake Ellenberger was able to do to Carlos Condit standing (read: more than Martin) I think Daley is the clear favorite on the feet. Two questions remain: 1) can Kampmann get Daley down onto the ground? 2) Is Daley to the point yet where he can survive on the ground? I feel like I've been crazy upset happy with my picks lately but still. Paul Daley by TKO, round 1.

Mike Fagan: I'm sure everyone expects me to take Martin Kampmann, being the resident BE Kampmann nuthugger. Well, you're right. Whatever advantage Daley will have standing is marginal at best, and Kampmann will own once it hits the floor. And unless the Dane stubbornly keeps it standing, it will hit the floor. Also, check out Daley's fight with Nick Thompson to see him get owned on the feet. Martin Kampmann by submission, round 2.

Chris Nelson: I get the impression that Kampmann doesn't view Daley as a credible opponent, or at least as credible as Swick. He may be right, but that kind of thinking gets you Koscheck'd. I like Daley for the upset in a fight that I would otherwise give him very little chance of winning. Daley via TKO, round 1.

Eugene Schelfaut: Nothing has given me assurance that Daley will be able to keep on the floor. I'll gladly join the echo chamber as Martin Kampmann wins via submission, round 1.

Nick Thomas: Kampmann > Swick > Daley. Kampmann by submission.

Leland Roling: Daley's ground game continues to improve, but only from a defensive standpoint in order to get the fight back to the feet. It still remains his Achilles' heel, and Kampmann happens to have a solid grappling game coupled with his kickboxing background. Kampmann needs to be much more calculated in his strikes to setup the takedown, but I see him putting a submission on Daley. Martin Kampmann via submission, Round 2.

Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg

Luke Thomas: Unless he can control Koscheck - and he can't - Trigg can't win. Trigg in many ways still has the proto-typical style of wrestling converts who have to muscle opposition to get them where he wants them. Unless Koscheck makes major mistakes, that's not going to happen. Koscheck by decision.

Kid Nate: Been thinking about this a lot lately. Koscheck is far and away the more dynamic athlete at this point in time and he's probably more well rounded as well, but he still struggles to transition from one phase of the game to the next. Trigg is coming off a long layoff and fighting at a lighter weight than he has in years. Coin toss. Koscheck by submission.

Brent Brookhouse: As Trigg said, it's like he's fighting himself in a mirror. Except the him in the mirror is faster, stronger, fresher, better. Josh Koscheck by TKO, round 2.

Michael Rome: Fight is hopeless for Trigg unless Koscheck decides to be reckless, which he does a lot lately. Even standing I think he wins though, Josh Koscheck via KO, round 1.

Mike Fagan: Koscheck on the Countdown show: "Frank Trigg is good at two things. One, giving up his back. Two, tapping out." He's already owned Trigg with the trash talk, and he'll own him in the cage too. Josh Koscheck by (dominating) decision.

Chris Nelson: Why is Trigg back in the UFC? Shortage of 170-pound gatekeepers? Insert tired line about Koscheck being a young Trigg here. Koscheck via TKO, round 2.

Eugene Schelfaut: Trigg does not win this. "Twinkle Toes" will not be off his back if Koscheck shoots through him and puts him there. Josh Koscheck via RNC, round 3.

Nick Thomas: Trigg is way too big of an underdog in this fight. But that doesn't mean he's going to win. Koscheck could win this by ground and pound... but I'll go with Koscheck by submission.

Leland Roling: I've always liked Frank Trigg for the simple fact that he doesn't really care what anyone thinks. He's a guy who speaks his mind, and he plays the heel perfectly. But this time, I think he's met his match. Not only does Koscheck play the heel, he is, in fact, a younger, faster version of Trigg himself. And that's the real problem... can Trigg contend with Koscheck? Koscheck's wrestling is going to be a huge load for Trigg to deal with, and striking may be advantageous to Trigg if he's improved. The only way I see Trigg winning is by Koscheck's wildness, and I don't see it happening. Josh Koscheck via decision.

Hermes Franca vs. Tyson Griffin

Luke Thomas: As much as I see Griffin putting himself in bad spots, I see him extracting himself from them as well. Rinse and repeat. And like Sherk, Griffin's pace is going to stymie Franca as the fight wears on. Griffin by split decision.

Kid Nate: Tyson Griffin is the decision king of the lightweight division. His submission game won't come into play against Franca's BJJ mastery. Tyson has far better technical kickboxing but Franca has the KO power. I think Tyson will rely on his wrestling to put Franca on his back and grind out another decision. Griffin by decision.

Brent Brookhouse: I'd love to see Hermes get a W as people are starting to forget how good he really is. But Tyson is great at controlling fights and taking decisions. Tyson Griffin by decision.

Michael Rome: Really bad fight for Franca, who will spend the whole fight hunting for submissions while he loses a decision. Griffin via decision.

Mike Fagan: I'm not sure how this looks any different than Franca's fights with Sherk and Edgar. He spent the vast majority of those fights on his back, and he'll do the same in this fight. Even if Griffin decides to stand, he'll likely lose the fight there too. Tyson Griffin by decision.

Chris Nelson: Franca and Griffin have 13 decisions in their combined 18 UFC fights. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this one's going the distance, with Griffin doing his usual grind out top game. Griffin via decision.

Eugene Schelfaut: If Tyson gets tagged on the feet, I see him as being able to take it to the ground if conscious and recover. Franca has the ability to end it with his hands, but won't: Tyson Griffin via decision.

TULANE +17’ OVER BYU
Full disclosure—I wish this was some other team than Tulane in this spot. Still, there are so many situational components here to justify a play against BYU that we’ll give the Green Wave a shot. First of all, this is a classic ‘letdown spot’ with BYU off of one of their biggest upsets in program history and certainly their biggest since the Lavell Edwards era. This leads us to another important concept--no team is as good as they look at their best, or as bad as they look at their worst. This is basically a contrarian guideline--sort of like in the stock market when you should 'sell when everyone else is buying and vice versa'. Consider what the public perception of the spot will be with BYU off the biggest upset of the opening week and Tulane getting throttled by Tulsa--"John Q. Public" won't realize that Tulane lost a lot of practice time as over a dozen key players suffered from 'flu like symptoms' in the week or two prior to the game
It also qualifies as a "Sandwich" spot: This is what really makes this a great situational spot for a play on Tulane. In addition to the 'letdown' after their big upset they have what we call a 'lookahead' spot for BYU on 9/19 as they open their home season against Florida State. So they open their season against OU, Tulane and Florida State--which game do you think is the least significant to BYU? I wouldn't be surprised if running back Harvey Unga sits out this week as well. He’s currently listed as ‘questionable’, but even if he plays it doesn’t really change this handicap. If anything, it might mean that BYU will want to work on their running game which was almost nonexistent against Oklahoma and that works in our favor with long drives eating up the clock.
Bronco Mendenhall (who is just a great coach, BTW, and the first decent guy BYU has had running the program since Lavell Edwards retired) has said that his teams aren't going to run up scores on overmatched opponents "even if it hurts them in the BCS standings". That's not exactly true (last year they beat UCLA and Wyoming on successive weekends by a combined score of 112-0 or thereabouts) but BYU hasn't shown a tendency to blow teams out on the road. Their biggest margin of victory on the road LY was 20 points at Utah State. If they get a margin, look for Max Hall and a number of other starters to sit, leaving the door open for a 'back door cover'.
I really don’t see Tulane pulling the outright upset, but off an emotionally and physically draining game against the Sooners and with the Seminoles on deck I don’t see BYU getting any kind of a margin either. Tulane can put points on the board and though they won’t win a shootout with the Coogs they have an excellent chance at keeping the margin respectable and cashing our ticket. BYU hasn’t been a great ATS team in recent years (10-15 overall L3 years, 4-8 on the road) and in a mindset where they’ve got bigger fish to fry they’ll likely be happy to phone in a win.
BYU 34-24 OVER TULANE
SOUTH CAROLINA/GEORGIA UNDER 38’
South Carolina will live and die by their defense this year and was evidenced in their opening game victory at NC State the Gamecocks have a pretty good stop unit. Georgia is working in a new quarterback, and their offense didn’t look particularly impressive against Oklahoma State either. Most significantly, perhaps, every time these two teams line it up it’s a classic SEC war. Some of the situational records from the series should give you an idea of what we’re talking about—12 of the last 14 head to head matchups have gone UNDER. 5 of the last 7 games in Athens have gone UNDER. The individual teams are also strong ‘UNDER’ sides—the Gamecocks have gone UNDER in 15 of their L24 lined games, 6 of 11 on the road and 7 of 8 in September. The Bulldogs have gone UNDER in 9 of their last 11 at this price range (-3’ to -10). Some interest in the Gamecocks +7, but this is probably a smarter way to play it.
GEORGIA 21-10 OVER SOUTH CAROLINA
CLEMSON +5’ OVER GEORGIA TECH (THURSDAY)
I’m not particularly impressed with this Georgia Tech team, though Paul Johnson is a solid coach. For that reason I was surprised to see money come in on the Yellow Jackets with the line being bet up from the opening -4 to the current price. There’s been some concern over the status of Tigers’ running back CJ Hiller after he left the game last Saturday against Middle Tennessee with either a hamstring pull or a foot injury, depending on which report you read. Hiller maintains that he’s 100% and is ready to go against Tech (the injury reports ‘officially’ list him as ‘probable’). As one of the best running backs in the country, his play is crucial for the Tigers’ success in this game and all year long.
I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong about something, and I’ll gladly affirm that was the case with Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. I initially thought he was over his head in his role at the Tigers’ helm but he proved me wrong and has revitalized the program in TigerTown. Swinney took over the team following a 3-3 start and won 4 of the last 6 regular season game including a big in-state rivalry victory over South Carolina. His first game was a loss—against Georgia Tech.
Clemson has the better defense, and since the Tigers joined the ACC this series has been a dead even affair SU at 13-13. The series itself dates back to the Paleolithic era of college football—the two teams have played dating back to 1903 when Clemson won by a 73-0 score under head coach John Heisman (as in the ‘Heisman Trophy’).
The Tigers have covered 9 of their L12 as a road dog in this price range (+3’ to +7) and have covered 10 of 17 overall against Georgia Tech as well as 5 of the L8 in Atlanta. In my opinion, they’re the better team and we’re getting a nice value on the Tigers. Look for Clemson to win outright here.
CLEMSON 28-21 OVER GEORGIA TECH
DUKE/ARMY UNDER 43’
Big game for Army, as Rich Ellerson makes his home debut off of a nice win at Eastern Michigan. Everyone knows the deal with Army—they’ll run, run, run all game. Early money backed the Cadets, moving the line to Army -2’ after it opened Duke -1. We like Army to pull out a hard fought SU victory as well, but the total looks like the better play here. Duke is far from an offensive juggernaut and only put 16 points on the board last week in a loss to FCS/1-AA Richmond. To be fair, Richmond has a very good program at that level but an inability to put points up versus a lower competitive level of football doesn’t bode well for their ability to do so here. On the other hand, Duke has a decent defense which helps our position on the UNDER even more.
The Blue Devils have gone UNDER in 12 of their L15 September games, and 10 of their L12 on the road. Going back even further, Duke has gone UNDER in 19 of their L25 away games. Army has gone UNDER in 3 of 10 at this price range (-3 to +3) and that is particularly significant here. What that suggests is that a team that is usually a sizable underdog brings a little extra intensity into games where they’ve got the best chance of winning. In what should be a festive atmosphere in West Point, they’ll control the ball, win the game and send this one UNDER.

While some mainstream media types have panned the UFC 103 fight card for lacking a ‘marquee matchup’, MMA hardcores have praised the card as top to bottom one of the most solid and competitive of the year. MMA betting enthusiasts, meanwhile, will find no shortage of attractive underdogs on which to wager.

Rich Franklin remains at a high level, but you gotta love the value in this catchweight fight with the underdog Vitor Belfort. Belfort has some of the fastest hands in the sport and the ability to knockout even tough SOBs like his Affliction: Day of Reckoning victim Matt Lindland. Franklin has looked very sharp of late, but this line may reflect the general public’s greater familiarity with Franklin relative to Belfort than it does any qualitative advantage in the fight.

Mirko Cro Cop +110
Junior Dos Santos -140

Another live dog in Croatian striking machine Mirko Cro Cop. Cro Cop’s career has had its ups and downs since leaving PRIDE for the UFC, and the question now is simply: ‘Does he have anything left’? We’re thinking he does, and you’re getting one of the most feared strikers in the history of MMA as an underdog. Dos Santos is a nice young fighter, but his biggest wins have been over Stephan Struve and Fabrico Werdum. Cro Cop has fought the best of the best and won the PRIDE Open Weight GP Title by beating Josh Barnett and Wanderlei Silva. On the same night. Cro Cop looked fairly decent in his last UFC fight, though he competed without using his legendary kicks due to recent knee surgery. Now he says he’s 100% physically. Cro Cop may not be the fighter he was in 2006 but that line about ‘right leg—hospital, left leg—cemetery’ is no joke. Don’t be surprised if Cro Cop wins by KO here with Dos Santos introduced to his trademark high left kick.

Franca enters having lost two of his last three fights, and may need a win here to remain in the UFC. He’ll have a tough opponent against one of the UFC’s ‘human highlight films’, Tyson Griffin. Much like Clay Guida (whom Griffin defeated by split decision in a ‘fight of the year’ candidate bout), you’re not going to outwork Griffin.

The Aftermath of “The Sopranos prop”

An old conventional wisdom about betting with “local bookmakers” goes something like this: “When you bet with a local bookie there are two sweats: winning your bet and getting paid.” I never imagined that this would apply to getting paid offshore for a winning bet on “The Sopranos” prop.

More about that in a moment. The good news was that the first episode of “The Sopranos” 6th season went down just as I had predicted. There were three deaths in the first episode: a random guy that owed the Soprano family money gets shot. FBI informant Ray Curto drops dead in an agent's car just as he's about to spill the beans on some nefarious act committed by Tony. And late in the show our choice for “first to die”--Eugene Pontecorvo—hangs himself. Since the offshore books taking action on the “first to die” prop made it clear that they wouldn't pay for the death of a random character (WWTS specified that the death “must be a known character”) and Raymond Curto wasn't on the list at any of the books getting the bet graded as a winner would be a forgone conclusion. Or so I thought...

The problems began with a case of mistaken identity: a number of news sources including the New York Daily News incorrectly identified the guy that dropped dead in the FBI agent's car as Patsy Parisi and not Curto. This was a problem since Patsy was on the “first to die” list at Pinnacle, Oasis and YouWager. Pinnacle, to their credit, tried to do the right thing and grade the wager quickly—grading bets on Patsy as winners and on everyone else (including our bet on Eugene) as a loser. At this writing, Pinnacle is researching the matter further after being made aware of the error. Since what I presume to be the “official source” on this matter—the plot synopsis on the HBO website—clearly lists Curto as the dead informant I'm hopeful that this will get paid correctly. WWTS had a different prop, on whether or not a member of the Soprano crime family would die in Episode One. Since not one, but two of them met their final reward this was clearly a winner and the book has paid on these bets.

Chuck Liddell + Dancing With The Stars = Disaster?

Despite popular opinion, UFC light heavyweight superstar Chuck Liddell is a man of many contradictions.

On one hand, he is one of the most feared knockout artists in MMA betting history and perhaps one the league’s most intimidating fighters of all-time. He seemingly represents the “everyman” UFC fan from small towns across America, and it’s easy to picture “The Iceman” kicking back on a warm summer day in front of the grill cooking BBQ chicken and throwing back a few beers with his trademark mini-gut hanging out.

But what many others don’t know is that he also is a notoriously club-scene lover who enjoys painting his toenails and dancing deep into the morning; so much so that it’s even been rumored to be a hobby of his on nights before a fight.

Now, Liddell plans to take those dancing skills to the uber-popular ABC reality show “Dancing with the Stars,” along with fellow athletic celebrity Michael Irvin and such well-known people as R&B singer Mya, Kelly Osbourne, and singer Macy Gray.

Speculation and talk about whether or not Liddell would retire from the UFC should be on hold while the world sits back and watches if The Iceman has what it takes out-dance some of his celebrity contemporaries.

He might not seem like the most graceful guy in the Octagon but never underestimate what a pro athlete can do when given proper instructions and the time it takes to commit to something. They are extremely competitive people and many athletes have had success on Dancing with the Stars including Emmitt Smith and Warren Sapp, the latter a guy not many people expected to have a good run on the show due to his size and perceived lack of gracefulness.

Also, BetUS will no doubt have odds on who’s going to win Dancing with the Stars as it has been a popular bet in past seasons. Who knows, Liddell might actually be worth throwing a fellow bucks on as an underdog.

And of course, if you have no idea who to bet on, you can always just ask your wife or significant other who they think has the best chance to win. If you watch the show with her, those hours might be used as an excuse to watch some extra football on the weekends.

This is also an important component of the handicap, since unlike previous years there is now only one major wrestling organization in the US. This precludes a lot of scenarios where a prominent wrestler would “jump ship” to the WWF. Basically, the talent that is currently in the organization is the only talent that will be considered to win the Royal Rumble. There are a few big names that are currently “free agents” such as Bill Goldberg, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall but they’re all still under contract to Time Warner (former owners of the now defunct WCW promotion) and have a very sound fiscal reason for not joining the WWF. Even if they did, it’s doubtful that they’d quickly be elevated into a headline status. It’s just not the way that Vince McMahon does business—the only previous Royal Rumble winner that was a relative “newcomer” was 1992 winner Ric Flair, though he was already a legend in the business.

It’s also important to keep in mind that the WWF is now a publicly traded company, and with ratings, revenue and stock prices down there’s a good deal of pressure to come up with a solid main event for the biggest PPV of the year. As a result, the Wrestlemania main event, and, therefore, the Royal Rumble winner, will be as much of a business decision as a wrestling storyline decision.

Of the previous Royal Rumble winners, only three are still with the promotion. One owns the promotion—Vince McMahon, who won in 1999, another is the current WWF champ (Steve Austin), so we’ll start our handicap with the only active wrestler who’s won the event before:

HANDICAPPING THE ROYAL RUMBLE:

The Favorite: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the favorite to win the event (+350) and for good reason. He’s arguably the most popular wrestler in the promotion, has a “history” with champion Steve Austin, and the recent storyline indicates that he’s very likely the choice to face the champ at Wrestlemania. With the urgency of a strong buyrate for the PPV, the WWF may want to go with the obvious choice.

Other Possibilities:

If, for whatever reason, it doesn’t end up being the Rock vs. Austin at Wrestlemania there aren’t many wrestlers on the roster that the WWF management would want to put in such an important spot. Triple H is due back from injury in late December or early January. He’s got the drawing power to get the nod, he’s juiced in with the corporate honchos in the WWF, and has been romantically linked (onscreen and off) to Stephanie McMahon (Vince’s daughter). We’ll take a small position on him. Kurt Angle, who’s a legit Olympic Gold Medalist, has become one of the biggest stars in the sport in a very short time. He’d be an option for the WWF, though I’d doubt if he’d be the first option. We’ll take a shot on him as well. Of the newcomers, former ECW standout Rob Van Dam (aka RVD) could have a shot. He’s got serious downsides against him—he’s a very vocal proponent of marijuana use (he’s been featured in “High Times” magazine) which wouldn’t look good in the media, he’s been accused of “working” rough with the other wrestlers (leading to injury), and he really doesn’t have a style that would mesh well with Austin’s. Of the “short odds” wrestlers, these are the only ones that have a legit chance to getting to the Wrestlemania main event. Everyone else on the roster just isn’t right for the spot, for one reason or another.

The Longshots:

There are two longshots, however, that I’ll throw a little bit of money on. The first is WWF owner Vince McMahon at +2200. He’s a former winner of the event, and is far from shy when it comes to pushing himself in the storyline or promoting himself on television. He could conceivably win “the Rumble” and then somehow lose or give up the Wrestlemania shot the next night on RAW. The McMahon family—including daughter Stephanie and son Shane—has been on TV too much recently, and wrestling fans are starting to get sick of them. I don’t think McMahon would have the nerve to put himself in the Wrestlemania main event with things the way they are now, but then again this is a man who’s not afraid to show his bare ass on national TV. There are worse things to do than bet on a confirmed egomaniac who runs the company and has demonstrated that he’ll elevate himself over his wrestlers if the mood strikes him.

The only other wrestler I could even consider from among the longshots is Chris Benoit, who is a favorite of “hardcore” wrestling fans and arguably the best “worker” in the world. He’s got a couple of drawbacks—he’s been injured and isn’t due back until early 2002 which doesn’t give much margin for error in establishing him as a serious contender. He’s also not as charismatic or as good on the mike as the other choices. I can’t see him as a first choice, but if something happened to the first few choices he might be, in the eyes of the WWF management, the “best of the rest”.

Steve Austin?: There’s some concern that the WWF might have Austin drop the title before the Royal Rumble, and go into Wrestlemania as the challenger after winning the Royal Rumble. Personally, I don’t see it—with the potential opponents for Austin that are available there’s no real advantage to having him drop the belt. For now, I’ll pass on Austin but I’ll keep an eye on developments just in case we need a hedge.

Our Wagering Mix: For now, here’s what we’ll do. The only changes I can reasonably foresee making between now and the Rumble is adding a hedge on Austin should he lose the title. It might be worth adding Triple H to the mix closer to the event depending on how his rehab from injury is going.:

Fedor Emelianenko remains the odds makers choice at incredible -825 (Bet $825 for a $100 return) while former UFC champion Vitor Belfort is a +550 underdog.

Despite the lopsided odds former UFC champion Randy Couture believes that Belfort would be a credible challenger for worlds top ranked heavyweight. In a recent interview with with ESPN's Jake Rossen and Sacha Feinman, Couture claimed that Belfort had as good of a chance as late withdrawl Josh Barnett. “The fact that he's a southpaw and Fedor hasn't prepared for a southpaw, the fact that he is very, very agile and explosive and a great boxer all lend well to him having a great performance," Couture said. "It's really a win-win for Vitor to fight one of the top guys in the sport, being a smaller guy stepping up on such short notice. … He's got just as good a chance as anybody. Certainly he has as good a chance as Barnett had at fighting Fedor."

Its looks official. Cro Cop will more than likely face rising star Junior dos Santos.

The Brazilian striker is very inexperienced, has spent about a 1 minute inside the octagon and he's already facing Cro Cop. He trains with good people though, Nog and Anderson Silva. I've also seen him spare with Shogun Rua. According to his UFC biography he started training in 2005, I don't know how accurate that is but I wouldn't like to loose to a guy that took up the sport four years ago. Incidentally thats the same year Cro Cop faced Fedor.

One thing is for sure, the UFC loves Cro Cop. Eddie Sanchez, Gonzago, Kongo, Al Turk, now Dos Santos. Its another match-up that should suit the Croatian very well.

I dont know if you guys caught the latest Dana White interview where he touched on Cro Cop situation again. I thought I’d post here in light of recent developments. Like in 99% of these phony interviews the DJ/host is always kissing his ass so hard its embarrassing. The guy asked him if Cro Cop called White and asked him to stop calling him names in the press (or words to that effect) and Dana replied, "hmm.. but you're pretty good." So in roundabout sleazy way saying yes. When asked if Cro Cop could ever return to the UFC, White replied, "See what happens. He hasn’t fought in Japan yet. On a completely different note, is it just me or has the UFC commentary been lacking as of late. I like Joe Rogan, he seems like a nice guy but my fondness for his “special comments” (and comedy too but that's another story) has waned. I think it all started around the Pride acquisition and culminated at UFC 79 at Lyoto Machida vs. Sokoudjou, when Joe Silva made the this isn’t Japan comment, insinuating that Soku's competition was easier in Japan and Rogan agreeing with him. He has came off a UFC company man ever since.

Mike Goldberg is just horrific. MMA commentating lacks the professionalism of the NBA, NFL etc, and is one of the few things that annoy me about MMA right now. I could tolerate it a few years ago when it was still a fringe sport but now its starting to bug me.

UFC 100 is the UFC biggest and most important card this year. Six huge names and arguably the new face of the UFC, Brock Lesnar, headline this epic card. Its one not to be missed. If you have friends or family that have yet to watch an MMA event, make sure they catch this card on PPV. For the betting inclined, i recommend heading over to Sportsbook and opening an account.

Artie Lange Kills On Joe Buck Live

If you're a fan of the Howard Stern Show you'll know that Artie Lange is one of the funniest guys on the planet. Last night he appeared on the Joe Buck Live show, once again he killed as he always does. He was the show, he saved the show. This clip has been making the rounds and has been covered on the New York Times and USA Today. Here is the video again, for those who have not seen it already.

Despite the outrage by certain sections of the media and Buck himself, Artie did exactly what the produces brought him on the show for. Sure he caused a little controversy but he saved that snore fest. Please never change Artie.

Cro Cop returns and leaves again?

He looked in the best form since his Pride days but was it just a game for Cro Cop? Did he fool us all or is there more to the story?

I listened to the pre-fight Cro Cop conference call and he really did say that his aim was the UFC title. Maybe there was some sort of misunderstanding where he thought that the UFC would let time fight in Germany, then let him go back to Japan for 2009, and let him return to the UFC for a title run in 2010? I don't know, but he doesn't seem like a guy who'd just screw over people.

Another easy opponent for Cro Cop to make his real comeback against but i think everyone said the same thing against Kongo and Overeem too. Al-Turk will be looking to take him down early - he can only win via decision - a submission victory for him is very unlikely - his stand-up is not a threat to Mirko, remains one of the worlds best strikers. Once again Cro Cops hands will be his key to victory. Having watched many of his recent training sessions there is no doubt in my mind that Cro Cop will win in early in first via K.O or T.K.O. UFC and Cro Cop reunite

Well by know you would have all heard the news that Cro Cop is after all returning to the UFC. This is the best news in sports that I've heard in a long while but still Paula Abdul is more stable than this guy. First he was in, than he was out but finally he came to his senses and made the right decision by the fans. Subjectively speaking he could have had few tough match-ups in Affliction an Dream too but the UFC was best decision for both for his career and legacy.

He can make a boat load of money, become a fan favorite once again and capture the most prestigious title in MMA if things go his way. There are huge number of match-ups to look forward to but I’m not going to count my chickens before they hatch. I think we’ve all been guilty of that when it comes to Cro Cop. The guy has all the tools to become one of the best once again, but its all mental with Mirko. I wish him the best and hope that UFC fans will finally see that famous left high kick.

UFC 98 Betting Odds Update

Full card odds and lines have finally been released for one of most important MMA events this year. Headling this speculator card will be the light heavyweight showdown between long time contender Lyoto Machida and TUF 2 winner Rashad Evans. Despite being current undefeated light champion Evans will enter the bout as a relatively big underdog. The odds makers expect Machida put in another flawless performance however at +175 Evans is starting to look like a value bet for some.

Also on the card is the grudge match between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra. Former welterweight champion Hughes is expected to return to form against fellow veteran Serra. MMA Betting Advice: Staying Cool

It’s very ironic that this first post on "MMA betting" coincides with my first major downswing of the year. April 2009 will see my first losing month since September 2008. No prizes for guessing when I’ll be booking my holidays in 2010.

Of course, having a losing run is not the end of the world. I’ve had them before, and no doubt I’ll have them again. While I hate losing money with a passion (the day I stop caring about losses is possibly the day I should go and find something else to do), it’s all good character-building stuff apparently and previous losing experiences have taught me to do certain things when I’m leaking more money than I would like to.

Top on my list is not to chase the losses! Such advice is given out so often that it falls into the category of an over-used cliche, but even now after years of betting, sometimes a little demonic voice whispers inside my head to put a little bit more on the next bet and get back that red figure straight away. Experience and mechanical bet sizing helps resist the temptation but that hasn’t always been the case.

Once I’ve sent that particular devil packing and have my emotions reasonably under control, I’ll set aside a little time to do some evaluation. I have written on a piece of paper near my desk “Good Bets Sometimes Lose and Bad Bets Sometimes Win”. Winning (or losing) money is not necessarily an indicator you are doing things right (or wrong). So if I’m losing money, is it just Lady Luck evening things out or has something slipped into my game that’s causing a leak?

Assessing whether luck is playing a role might require brutal honesty. And to be brutally honest, luck had nothing to do with it. This time around, it didn’t take too long to work out what the problem was. I’m just about to shift house and am moving to a town 100 kilometers away. While I had planned to take some time off this month, unfortunately Rugby Union is one of my main betting sports and the small matter of the Rugby World Cup seduced me into placing bets. Trouble is, I was placing bets without the usual standard of care and preparation thanks to the distraction of moving.

Occasionally losing runs are just the result of being plain unlucky. If that’s not the case, more often than not situational and/or motivational issues will be the cause or at least a contributing factor to a betting slide. Critically look in these areas for possible reasons for a bad run, not just wondering about luck or whether you’ve made a series of bad bets.

Jose Conseco to Face Choi In Super Hulk Tournament

In some of the most bizarre (yet totally awesome) match making to ever come out of the "Land of the Rising Sun" disgraced former baseball star José Canseco will face Korean giant Hong Man Choi in the first round of DREAM's Super Hulk Tournament. Yes I said it Super-Hulk-Tournament. OK, I’ll give you 30 seconds to digest that before I continue.

The full tittle is in fact even scarier: “Super Hulk Tournament ~World Superman Championship~”. Or as I like to call it "SHTWSC". The match-up is confirmed and will take place on May 26th. Also set to participate are Bob Sapp, Sokoudjou, Gegard Mousasi and Mark Hunt. The full line-up is not yet complete, a major match-up will be announced closer to the event according to organizers (My tip Michael J. Fox vs. King Kong Bundy).

Since his fall from grace Conseco has been making ends meet by fighting in several exhibition bouts . In 2007 former football player Vai Sikahema accepted a challenge to fight Canseco for a reported $30,000. An ill prepared Conseco was knocked out the in the first round. Most recently Canseco fought radio host and former child star Danny Bonaduce; the three-round battle ended in a majority draw. The fight was heavily publicized on the Howard Stern show.

Outside the “Hulk” tournament there is in fact some credible MMA taking place including a pretty big lightweight bout between Tatsuya Kawajiri and J.Z.Calvan and a welterweight title fight between Ronaldo Jacare vs. “Mayhem” Miller.

Frye Guy

How can you not like Don Frye? The guy is a total legend and an originator of the game. He is known as "The Predator", yet has a face that looks like a catcher's mitt with a porn-stache glued on. Seriously, he's larger than life in Japan. Frye is the man for more reasons than I can name. Scientific experiments indicate that if you're one of the fans that don't know who Don Frye is, you're 80% more likely to "train UFC", think Forrest Griffin's stand-up is awesome and generally exhibit other douche bag like symptoms.

I recently discovered a video in which some no name, jobber-assed, wannabe MMA star named Sonny Westbrook attacks Don in a hotel lobby. From what I can gather, Sonny thought Frye disrespected him and blah blah blah, you get the gist. Anyways, this no-name attacks Frye:

Seeing this pissed me off. You’ve never heard of Sonny Westbrook, and you probably never will, because if this video is any indication of this guy’s lack of bravery and respect for the game, he will never amount to anything in the sport.

THIS fight, more specifically Don Frye(in this fight) is one of the best examples of pure balls-out-fighting I've ever seen. In fact, there are two fights that really stand out for Frye. Here they are:

I would be lying if I tried to say that Frye isn’t getting a little old, but he’s still plugging away as he seems like the kind of guy that would rather die than retire. He picked up a KO victory over Bryan Pardoe in January of last year, but lost his last match via knee bar submission to Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa at DEEP’s Gladiator event in August of 08. Don Frye is a legend of MMA and a shoe-in for a spot in the UFC hall of fame. His head is like cement, he's proven on the ground, he can strike hard with his hands, and he is entertaining as hell to watch. Respect to The Predator.

Should Fighters Be Tested Outside Competition?

More fighters test positive for recreational drugs than performance enhancing drugs. But still a low percentage for the actual amount of recreational drug usage that is involved in the sport. We've seen guys like Baroni and Randleman get busted, but the testing is random. It should mandatory for every fighter, at every event. It seems that recreational drugs - like coke, pot and others are very popular among fighters as well. The current state of affairs is simply too lax.

In Shooto, Bushido, and the closing days of Pride, a truly unique fighter emerged in the land of the rising sun. A Japanese fighter with the heart of a lion. He had fists of stone and a chin that should have had an ‘out of order’ sign hanging off of it. What’s more, this young fighter truly fought balls out, standing toe to toe and banging with the best at a time when going to the mat was the norm for Japanese fighters.

Undefeated in the Shooto organization, “The Fireball Kid” Takanori Gomi won an impressive fourteen straight fights. While he clearly dominated the competition, his time at Shooto did not make him the renowned figure he would become. With most of his wins coming by way of decision, his true punching power and rock solid chin were yet to be tested. After suffering his first loss in 2003 to Joachim “Hellboy” Hansen, Gomi lost to another top-rate fighter in B.J. Penn at Rumble on the Rock 4.

The loss to Penn would mark the beginning of the Gomi many of us would come to love and admire. He moved to the fledgling Bushido promotion (an offshoot of Pride FC), and scored his first three victories via TKO in the first round. For audiences who had grown to expect little more than Jujitsu and Judo from their native fighters, the Japanese fans instantly fell in love with their fellow countryman, who stood and traded with the fiercest foreign competitors.

One of Gomi’s most notable rivalries was against the American fighter Charles “Krazy Horse” Benett. More than simply a match of fighters, many Japanese MMA fans saw this as a showdown between America and Japan. While Benett’s punching power was unquestionably on par with Gomi’s, Benett proved to be consistently disrespectful to refs, fighters, fans, and the Bushido organization as a whole. Before his title shot, Benett would make constant claims that Gomi was ducking him, and that the Japanese promotion was protecting him. In 2005, at Bushido 5 in Osaka, Benett got his wish and the two faced off. The victory went to Gomi at 5:52 of the first round due to a kimura, but Benett never tapped. While many fight fans were happy to see the loud-mouthed Benett defeated, there could be no denying that the ‘victory’ was sour at best. This would prove to be one of the first clear examples of Japanese fight promotions showing a bias towards Gomi. The reasons behind this bias can only be politely speculated on, but frankly speaking, the hyper-nationalism so predominant in Japanese MMA promotions was likely the dominant factor.

In the semi-finals of the lightweight tournament at Bushido seven, Gomi faced off against a Brazilian by the name of Luiz Azeredo. While Gomi would go on to win a decision, this match would mark the beginning of the end for the Fireball Kid. After catching Azeredo with a hook, the referee moved to end the fight. With a sudden, blatant disregard for the rules and the ref, Gomi (in one of the most cowardly acts witnessed by this MMA fan) jumped on his unconscious opponent and continued his attack. Officials and team members from both sides flooded into the ring in an attempt to restore order. Gomi would later issue an apology to the fans in which he claims that ‘adrenaline’ was the cause of his unsportsmanlike conduct.

In 2005, Gomi became the Pride Lightweight Champion by defeating Tatsuya Kawajiri and Hayato Sakurai in the promotion’s eight-man, tournament. Next, he would suffer a first round triangle choke submission in a non-title fight against Marcus Aurelio. Gomi would rematch against Aurelio for the title at Bushido 13 in 2006. This ‘match’ was comparable to the Silva/Leitis debauchery that we were exposed to at this year’s UFC 97, with neither fighter willing to…fight. Gomi would win the match via split-decision, but it would serve as more of a blemish for the Fireball Kid, than a solidification of his champion status.

Gomi’s next notable performance came at Pride 33 as he took on Nick Diaz. This bout against Diaz was arguably one of the best MMA matches in recent history. The two traded devastating blows throughout the fight, and while Diaz definitely sustained more visible damage, he ended Gomi in the second with a rarely seen gogplata submission. This victory for Diaz was subsequently changed to a no-contest by the NSAC after Diaz tested positive for wacky tobaccy. There is still controversy surrounding this ruling as marijuana is clearly not a performance enhancing drug. In fact, many make the claim that marijuana slows reaction time and generally reduces performance levels, so if Diaz beat Gomi in such an impressive fashion while under the influence of a performance inhibiting drug, then this MMA fan would love to have seen what Diaz could’ve done to Gomi without the ‘aide’ of weed . Gomi’s management made the claim that marijuana gave Diaz a higher pain threshold which allowed him to endure more punishment than usual.

In May of 2006, Zuffa purchased (and subsequently closed down) the Pride promotion. Soon after, a new Japanese promotion by the name of World Victory Road popped up. In the promotion’s first two events, Gomi defeated Duane Ludwig and some no-name Korean fighter, both in unimpressive fashions with a TKO due to a cut and a decision.

Gomi competed again in November of 2008, and January 2009 against two unknowns. He lost both matches in an unimpressive fashion, and subsequently disappeared from the MMA scene altogether.

In a recent interview, Gomi was asked about his latest performances and his leaving the MMA scene. In yet another seemingly half-hearted apology, Gomi said that he had been focusing on the development of his gym (Rascal Gym), and included that he is not the fighter he once was. The interviewer then pointed out that the name of the last event in which he performed so poorly was “Road to Gomi” (Translated from Japanese). Gomi reiterated that he does not think he is the fighter he once was, and said that he was sorry.

Takanori Gomi had all the tools and talent to be one of the greatest lightweights ever. What’s more, he had the whole nation of Japan behind him. While the Fireball Kid certainly had his time in the sun, and while few can deny the impact he’s had on the sport; when looking at his career in a general sense, it’s had to deny the bitter taste left in my mouth. I could easily wrap this up by simply saying that Gomi is a wash-up who should join Sakuraba in the annals of mediocrity. And I will.

UFC 97 Commentating: Bias Much?

By far the most infuriating thing about UFC 97 was the commentating. Mike "His precision is so precise" Golberg was his blabbering self but Rogan was really pissing me off. At the half mark stage he was saying words to the effect "the fans cant appreciate a technical fight". Looking for any which way to justify one of the dullest main events in UFC/Pride history. Toward the end the spin was that Anderson was so technical that it was going over the head of those in attendance. Leites than became the scape goat, he was over matched/outclassed. In fact he was so over matched that the fight want the distance, he often controlled proceedings and one judge even scored the bout 48-47. Ironically UFC crowd reacted perfectly.

Overeem On Horse Meat Diet

Alistair Overeem is as charming as ever in his latest interview. He once again tells us how awesome he is and credits a horse meat diet for much of his improved form (Is that what the kids call it nowadays) .

You've come a long way in past two years. What have you changed?

I changed my diet, I changed my coach and when I really think about it – I changed everything. From my girlfriend to my training and diet. Before I ate a lot of vegetables that are healthy but contained little energy. Now I mainly eat a horse meat, rice and protein shakes. I got rid of my old coach who was in charge of my fight strategies. It simply wasn't working. I just started to think about what I had to do to become a better fighter.

Overrated: The Anderson Silva Story

Silva is incredibly skillful. Very talented, no doubt one of the most complete fighters in MMA. However the greatest still set in game counts for nothing if you cant execute when it matters .

Silva did not have an “off night”. Like Liddell in his past five fights, Silva was exposed. Let him come to you and he’ll choke. When forced to create opportunities, he was too scared pull the trigger. He choked against Cote and he chocked against Leites. And no, Anderson is not bored or disinterested. Those are the excuses of MMA geeks to justify their lame P4P lists.

His reputation was built on mediocre competition. He has dominated the UFC’s weakest division. Outside his very impressive win over Dan Henderson his record is not that special. Best Bets

Anderson Silva should return to top form against an inexperienced and unproven contender. There are three to four middleweights who are more deserving of a title shot. The odds makers have it right, I cant see this bout going beyond the first round.

Liddell is desperate for a win however loss will effectively end his light heavyweight career. Rua is in a similar position. Since making his UFC debut Shogun has not shown us a second of the type of form that has made him one of the most dangerous light heavyweights in the world. However fans and pundits are underestimating the talented and dynamic Brazilian. Liddell is vulnerable to leg kicks and Shogun will expose him in that department like Jardine did.
